The author considers food taboos in Japan after the Buddhism has
spread in the 6th century, the propaganda and existence of Buddhist taboos
on the example of the Japanese setsuwa tales. The article shows how this
taboo actually functioned in Japanese society, as it was later adjusted in
accordance with the specifics of the gastronomic traditions and natural
conditions of Japan, as in the XIII c. exposing the sin of gluttony has been
replaced by irony.
