The German Nazi leadership viewed the Caucasian region, which links Europe with Asia, as a strategically important operational area for further intervention in the near and middle East. German troops drew up the «Edelweiss» plan for the occupation of the Caucasus. In the fall of 1941, because of numerous losses of the Soviet forces and the capture of an important part of the country territory, military mobilization completely falls on the central, southern and eastern regions of Russia, Azerbaijan, Georgia and Armenia. The USSR leadership decided to set up national military divisions. The North Caucasus strategic defense operation (25 July - 31 December 1942) is the period of massive use of full or partial military units from Caucasian servicemen in the World War II.Although the military command of the German troops first did not paid attention on the combat capability of the Soviet national divisions for the Caucasus, they were faced with serious resistance since August 1942. Some of Soviet military commanders also considered the national divisions as non-combatants and tried to put their mistakes over the military divisions in the battles.
