From the beginning of the 1920s to the beginning of the 1930s, Soviet Russia considered Turkish Republic — a new national, secular state which had been founded on the remnants of the Ottoman Empire — as an ally in the common anti-imperialistic struggle. A part of such a pragmatic approach was the attempts to create an artificial image of a new friendly Turkey which were made in the USSR. For instance, Mustapha Kemal’s efforts to develop a new state mythology were supported by some Soviet scholars. Nicholas Ya. Marr successfully disseminated the opinions of autochthony of the Turks in Asia Minor and Mediterranean region. However, in the period from the beginning of the 1940s to the beginning of the 1950s the positive image of Turkey in the USSR ceased to exist. Such a drastic change reflected new priorities in Joseph Stalin’s plans concerning the post-war geopolitical map of the Middle East. Consequently Turkey was to be seen by the USSR as successor of the aggressive Ottoman Empire. The opinions of Marr, the late chief of Soviet linguistics, concerning the “Turkish Question” proved to be harmful for such policy. Therefore participation of his followers (marrists) in the linguistic discussions in the years of 1948-1950 was doomed to failure. The present work deals with some anti-marrist arguments which can be found in a not widely known article of the year 1952 written by a famous Soviet turcologist Andrey N. Kononov.
