The article analyzes the modern form of Russia’s foreign linguistic policy — the Russian Language Ambassadors in the World project launched by the Pushkin Institute and relative to the enhancing Russia’s soft power at the present stage. The main attention is given to the purpose and the tasks of this intellectual volunteering programme in the context of foreign policy motives which Russia uses to justify its attempts aimed at both maintaining linguistic diversity and the Russian language and education in Russian promotion abroad (glottopolitical perspective). Special attention is given to the weak aspects of the programme as well — from its unclear message to the evident lack of strategy. To study all the aspects of the problem as a single set, the author uses the SWOT-analysis method. Based on this method, the author successively studies the strong and the weak aspects of the Russian Language Ambassadors in the World project, its possibilities and external threats. The conclusions are combined in a summary table — an analytical extract of all the key factors capacitating or incapacitating the efficiency of Russia’s linguistic policy abroad. Such point of view turns the study into the applied research, and bears out its scientific novelty against the background of other scientific work describing the situation with Russia’s soft power in general rather than focusing on the problems and prospects of the particular programme in the field.
