The follicle-associated epithelium of Peyer's patches is a part of gut-associated lymphoid tissue which maintains antigenic homeostasis in the organism. Follicle-associated epithelium has a lower permeability for macromolecules and ions which are provided by the higher level of claudin proteins. Antigens from chyme can affect barrier properties of follicle-associated epithelium, taking part in the regulation of its permeability.
