The article touches upon the issues of the insufficiently taught European languages, such as German and Romance, in the paradigm of Russian higher education. The objective prerequisites for the growth of students' interest in learning these languages as a second foreign language are defined. An assumption is made that this factor should be taken into account in the development of new approaches in the methodology of teaching a foreign language for special purposes.
