The influence of the Comintern policy on the development of the “Black Consciousness” in Brazil is tackled in the article. Various approaches to the solution of the problems of the Black population are discussed. Particular attention is paid to the slogan of national self-determination and an attempt to construct «Negro republics» in the early 1930s.
