This article conceptualizes the notion of the generational situation. Its empirical validation is implemented by a study of the hinterland of the old Russian North. The need for such a conceptualization follows from the limitations of the notion of generation, defined as a cohort influenced by common historical events and processes. In a generational situation, a generation is just one among the many factors forming it (age, stratum, profession, gender, type of settlement, etc.). In this study, the factor of generation is identified in making a migration decision after finishing school. The study sample included current young residents of small settlements and the representatives of older generations. The respondents were invited to deliberate on their decision-making in biographical interviews. The study reveals how the generation factor largely explains the differences in the patterns of migration behavior.
