The images of A. Brookner's novel “Look at me” are treated from the point of view of the hero/anti-hero conflict which is gender-oriented. The text of the novel is analyzed with the help of gender approach, comparative and discourse analyses. It is concluded that Francis, the main heroine, is represented in contrast with her antagonist, which is reflected in their appearance, personal qualities, social status, modes of behavior, discourse. The image of Francis follows all the prescriptions regarding traditional feminine behavior: domesticity (she longs to be a man's helpmate), selflessness, submission, obsessive lexicon of servitude and secrecy, suppressed sexuality. Her subjectivity is repressed. Possessing the ability of self-expression, having found her own voice as a writer, she still longs to be an object of man's viewing. Unlike Alix, anti-heroine, she has no story and experiences herself as an image, not a winner-doer. In creating a looser Brookner criticizes lasting assumptions and behavioral codes of patriarchal feminity.
