At the turn of the 1920s Nikolaj Feofanovich Jakovlev proposed his mathematical formula for creation of the economical alphabet in respect of the number of letters. The present paper deals with the problems of application of this formula to the phonological system of the Modern Russian literary language. The author came to the conclusion that under the present so called “syllabic principle” of Russian writing system all 33 graphemes of present-day Russian alphabet required by Jakovlev's formula are necessary and sufficient to designate all phonemic oppositions of Modern Russian.
