The article analyzes Japan's experience in the sphere of state educational politics, summarizes the results of reforms in this sphere, and distinguishes the major problems that country faced in the process of their implementation. The authors emphasize elements of Japan's politics in the sphere of education that may be used for successful completion of modernization in Russia's educational system, that takes place in a similar socio-economic environment.
