The article deals with the expanded combinability of some adverbs and functional parts of speech in modern English. By the example of intensifiers so, too and very, as well as explicative construction as in, the most common models of non-standard compatibility are identified. On the basis of the study, the authors conclude that in the modern English language there occurs blurring of the boundaries between parts of speech, and this indicates its development towards the isolating type.
