In his Christian views, Dostoevsky develops the religious tradition that
the Church has persecuted throughout history under the name of the Gnostic heresy
and which is based on the principle of the identity of God and man. In the story «The
Landlady» and in the novel «Crime and Punishment» Dostoevsky uses well-known
elements of the Gnostic myth: the idea that our world was created by the evil GodDemiurge and therefore is hell, as well as the myth of the capture of the Divine Sophia
by the forces of evil and her salvation by Jesus Christ.
