The article discusses the principles of choices for the inclusion of the Koranic text fragments in Islamic ritual practice, mainly in the rites of passage. The unity of the main set of ayahs and suras, recited at the turning points of an individual’s life, is a consequence of their initially functional purpose and transmission through the common Islamic tradition dating back to the rise of Islam. The existing differences maintained within the framework of local Muslim cultures are explained by both the pluralism of local traditions and the difference in ways to sacralization of the Quranic text and the Arabic language.
