The concept of a «cordon sanitaire» around Soviet Russia influenced a lot the outlines of the peace settlement after the First World War. It was forwarded and implemented the most consistently by French diplomats and militaries who sought to turn the cooperation between the countries of Eastern and Central Europe into a genuine front. But this goal has been never reached. Containment of Germany remained in the center of all considerations of the official Paris, and the danger of «Bolshevism» had been losing its importance in the early 1920s. Such priorities prompted France to shape the «cordon sanitaire» as a defensive alliance and to restrict its obligations of help against Soviet Russia. Disagreements between the counties of the region itself, primarily between Poland, Czechoslovakia, and Lithuania, were another key factor. The concept of the «cordon sanitaire» to a large extent ceased to determine the French policy after 1924.
