N2 - This article identifies and characterizes the sociocultural conditions in contemporary Russian society that influ-ence the institutionalization of large families. The theoretical and methodological framework utilizes the institu-tional approach to family and the tenets of the civilizational approach developed by Russian scholars (V.V. Kozlovskiy), as interpreted sociologically. The empirical base is a secondary analysis of public opinion survey data conducted by the All-Russian Public Opinion Research Center. A number of sociocultural trends are identified that influence the institutionalization of large families in Russia, taking into account the specifics of its civilizational development: the cultural diversity of regions and settlements in the Russian Federation; the intergenerational gap in value orientations regarding marriage, childbirth as a life event, and the desired num-ber of children; and the competing cultural images proposed within the framework of various models of civiliza-tional development in Russian society.
