The following article is dedicated to the problem of monolingual and bilingual approaches to teaching Spanish as a foreign language to the students of philology departments. The authors examine both approaches, revealing their advantages and disadvantages. The results of “needs and wants” questionnaire are presented. The authors provide the outcomes of observation and determine the most frequent purposes of mother tongue use among teachers.
