The article provides a comprehensive analysis of the digital adaptation of the Chinese village as a key tool of social governance within the context of the national “rural revitalization” strategy. The main aspects of the digital adaptation process are analyzed: technological (the implementation of integrative digital platforms), institutional (the transformation of the hierarchical governance model), socio-cultural (the interaction between the “major” urban and “minor” rural traditions), and spatial (the formation of digital space and the transition to “flat governance”). Key challenges slowing down the digital adaptation of the Chinese village are identified: digital inequality, institutional constraints, issues of privacy and trust, resource shortages, the primacy of form over substance in the process of digital adaptation as well as the subjective unpreparedness of certain population groups for digitalization. The authors conclude that the success of the digital transformation depends not so much on the implementation and development of technologies, but on the formation of a new type of individual in the Chinese countryside, one capable of combining adherence to traditional ways with innovative digital competencies.
