The article is devoted to the semantics and semiotics of the smell in the context of romantic relations between men and women. The methods and means of linguistic representation of female and male olfactoryness are considered, the specificity of using separate lexical units for the transfer of odor sensations experienced by lovers is determined. The research unit consisted of text fragments from works of fiction describing scenes of communicating lovers in German. The appeal to artistic texts was dictated by the non-publicity, the intimacy of romantic relationships, the impossibility of their empirical observation, which excludes the possibility of using real texts of everyday discourse. The analysis shows that the main thematic area of the description of smell in romantic discourse is the designation of the physiological effect on the partner. To verbalize this effect, metaphors are used that differently represent the smells of the sexes: when describing the female smell, the emphasis is placed on the attacking character of the smell, undermining the moral foundations of the partner, and when perceiving the smell of a man, the moment of captivity is emphasized, the enslavement of the woman by the smell, and the inability to resist him. An important means of describing odors in romantic discourse is the so-called synesthesia or emotional synaesthesia, built on the combination of emotional and scent impressions. Synesthesia fills the description of smell with specific content, determines situationally significant signs of odor; transmit the emotional experience of the olfactory sensation to the subject of perception of the smell. They represent the smell as a life-supporting food, like a thirst quenching drink or a veil wrapping a loved one with an invisible cloud. A special range for assessing the smell of a loved one is represented by stereotyped comparisons with flowers and fruits, traditionally presented as sources of pleasant aroma. In addition to the smells of a woman and a man, the work analyzes the language representation of the smells of the surrounding space in the context of romantic intercourse. The smells of the surrounding space in the romantic discourse are the semantic elements of the description of the scenes of communication of lovers, create a background of the situation, support it. There are two directions of verbalization of the emotional picture of the lovers' world: the positive olfactory perception of nature is transferred to the living space of lovers, the feelings are «naturalized» when the world of nature is projected onto the inner world of lovers; the reverse process - the transfer of «human» to nature, its anthropologization: lovers around the world see approval, support, reflection of their experiences. These two opposite tendencies serve as a basis for metaphorical images in describing romantic olfactoryness. A look at the world of fragrant images of love makes it possible to construct a cognitive model of a specific olfactory character in a romantic discourse that gives authors the opportunity to order the described linguistic facts, to combine them into a single, logically connected scenario and further predict the fundamentally possible additions to it, and characterize the concept under consideration from different angles.
