The article aims at considering mock identity construction in fiction. Analysis of Mrs Fry’s Diary shows how in this text, multilayered from the point of view of playing with identities, metarepresenting mechanisms allow the stylistic device of irony to function. It is argued that interaction between metarepresenting and mock identity allows broadening our understanding of irony as stylistic device as opposed to its traditional interpretation as a trope.
