It is known that disordered eating patterns are causedby the interplay of various factors, psychological influence being one of them and contributing significantly to the development of eating pathology. This study is focused on the correlation between disordered eating behaviour and some personality traits,in particular perfectionism. We also identified the effect which sociocultural factor has on this connection and on eating behaviour as a whole. 30 female students from Russia and 30 female students from Scandinavian countries (mostly from Denmark) took part in this study. Methods: Disordered eating was assessed using Dutch Eating Behavior Questionnaire (DEBQ) and Eating Attitudes Test (EAT-26), perfectionism –using Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale (Hewitt, P.L., & Flett, G.L) and Perfectionistic Self-Presentation Scale (PSPS) (Hewitt, P.L), self-esteem –using Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, societal and interpersonal aspects of appearance ideals -using Sociocultural Attitudes Towards Appearance Questionnaire (SATAQ-4). Results. We found that disorderedeating is associated with low self-esteem, perfectionistic self-presentation and such components of perfectionism as Self-Oriented Perfectionism (SOP) and Socially Prescribed Perfectionism (SPP). Findings also show that there is no difference in the intensity of disordered eating symptoms between Russian and Scandinavian students. Keywords:disordered eating, eating disorder, anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, perfectionism
