The article is devoted to the problem of power in the works of Netherlandish artist Peter Bruegel the Elder (c. 1525/30-1569). This problem is considered in two main aspects: from the point of view of the ruler (or executors of his will) and a society. The author comes to the conclusion that Bruegel had a negative image of earthly power. However, this image was shifted to the field of history and did not go beyond the existing tradition. Among other types of power, the most important is the power of fate, a universal law, one for man and for the world. All mankind is also subordinated to the power of vices and death. Perhaps this is due to the philosophy of stoicism, which, according to some assumptions, Bruegel could share.
