The paper discusses the translation of the collocation “clipped accent” from English into Russian. In English, its referential meaning is superimposed by sociocultural significance, thus making a cognitive shift to a modus category of cultural stereotype. Translation involves transfer to a corresponding Russian cultural stereotype of the same cognitive field. The textual equivalence depends on the translator's sociolinguistic and cultural competence.
