The article is devoted to consideration of the notion “discourse”. Its interpretations, provided by different authors, are analyzed. The authors consider the content of the discourse and its main characteristics that are of interest for research in the sphere of teaching foreign languages. The definition of discourse and its principal characteristics from the standpoint of methodology of teaching foreign languages are clarified.
