The article presents the analysis of the semantics and functioning of the phraseologism ‘to lose face’ in modern Russian. The authors note the increase of the volume of this idiom, identify meanings that are absent in dictionaries. It is concluded that two of the three meanings are actually Russian. The results of the study should be taken into account in intercultural communication, in the practice of RFL teaching and when composing learning dictionaries.
