The article discusses an approach to assessing the sustainability of Russian regions based on the
methodology of assessing the investment risk of regions of the Rating Agency Expert. The analysis of key
indicators assessing individual areas of investment risk in the regions showed that in this rating, specific
research and expert assessments, as well as other indicators, play a significant role. Some positions of the
regions differ significantly from the level of the main indicators of official regional statistics. This allowed
us to conclude that it is necessary to form a methodology for assessing strategic sustainability and to expand
the structure of the sustainability factors of the region. At the end of the article, the author proposes the
areas for assessing the sustainability of the regions and concludes about the importance of including indicators of strategic sustainability in the strategies of socio-economic development of the Russian regions.
