This article discusses the mechanism of formation of active citizenship in the process of civic education. In the course of the study, contemporary foreign and domestic theoretical and methodological developments in the field of civic education were studied, features in the domestic scientific discourse of approaches to the definition of civic education were identified, and the main organizational and substantive problems in civic education related to the implementation of civic education at schools and universities were identified.
