Since ancient times, icons have been an integral part of the Orthodox canon, but even today many
people, including believers, do not have a clear understanding of the reasons why icon painting is extremely
important for orthodox Christianity. This article studies the ways that scientists and great religious thinkers understood the sacred meaning of the icon itself, space and time in icon painting (on the example of the icon
"Descent from the Cross" from the collection of the State Museum of the History of Religion).
