This paper deals with the issues of economic situation and legal regulation of innovation. The main aspect of the article is the issues related to the definition of innovation and innovation activity as they are presented in the current federal law. The article highlights the importance of state support for innovation and states the main legal gaps in the fundamental regulation. As a result, conclusions are made about the necessity of making suitable adjustments in the current legislation on innovation, including by providing its codification.
