The author analyzes the nature of historical memory in modern time. In contrast to the ideas about the past in a traditional society, which saw in it the symbolic code of its own life, the views of the modern era are connected with the formation of an existential chasm between the past and the present. The reasons for this phenomenon are considered, as well as the mechanism for constructing the past in the modern world.
