On the basis of the two-dimensional (quasiareal) model, with the method of nonmetric multidimensional scaling using the matrix of pairwise lexical correspondences, we studied the connections between 104 languages belonging to 16 families using data from The Global Lexicostatistical Database. Although there is no doubt that the Indo-European family belongs to the Nostratic macro-family in the narrow sense of the word (Eurasiatic, according to Greenberg), it reveals a slight shift in the direction of the Semitic family, apparently caused by areal contacts of the protoIndo-European language.
