The article deals with the philosophical aspect of the issue of causes of phobias. It is shown that the key conceptions, which reveal these causes, are based on the presumption of existence of independent “self” that, in fact, can experience a phobic state. However, modern philosophy sees “self” in a completely different way than practicing psychology. Lack of consistent understanding of “self” makes problems of both theoretical and practical nature.
