The article discusses some aspects of the formative process of Daojiao (Taoism) as cultural phenomenon and the Chinese national religion. This process took place during the III-VI centuries A.D. (Six Dynasties epoch, Liuchao). And its initial stage is related by modern studies to the first centuries A.D., specifically the times of agony и perish of the Later (Eastern) Han Empire (25-220) and the times of disintegration of China - the Three Kingdoms period (Sanguo, 220/222-264/280). The emergence of Tianshidao (Heavenly Masters Sect) is taken for the major one event in this case. The author agues, basing on the evidence from the Chinese official historiographical works, Sanguozhi ( Record of the Three Kingdoms ) and Houhanshu ( History of the Later Han ) in the first hand, and taking in account current Western and Chinese studies, a significant role within the Daojiao formative process of popular religious movements and “heterodox” organizations. It was in them not only for the first time clearly showed the tendency to institutionalization of “proto-Taoist” beliefs and practices, but also was preparing the congregation for future “orthodox" Taoist institutions, what laid the principles of interaction of Taoist clergy and wide-ranging population. Exactly such participation of grass-roots religious forms in the formative process of Daojao made it possible to become a truly national religion, permeating the spiritual life of all Chinese society.
