The article examines the genre features of the oratorical prose of Cyril of Turov in terms of its stylistic, poetic, and ideological specificity. The author studies the philosophical and ideological preferences of the author's use of language and techniques to create images. Much attention is paid to the specifics of transforming constructions borrowed from the Greek and adapting them for clarity in the native language. The author shows the author's individuality and the creative principles of the lexical composition of his high poetry. The author summarizes the set of linguistic tools used by Cyril of Turov to unite the high Slavonic style with a reflection of the folk tradition. The author attempts to demonstrate that the views of some scholars, who held Cyril to be weak in rhetoric, are not justified. Concrete examples are offered to demonstrate that the “Russian Chrysostom” was a master of the metaphorical style and well-versed in rhetorical techniques, adapt at creating a language of images through explaining symbolism in paraphrase. The author concludes that the system of symbols is very well designed and the vocabulary is filled with philosophically meaningful words. This is important for understanding the mentality of medieval Russian society.
