Based on the dictionaries and encyclopedias of linguistics published in the late 20th - early 21th centuries, the article focuses on two essential aspects: how the meaning of the terms has been evolving in relation to the history of science, paradigm shifts in linguistics, its concepts and models, and how the terms can reflect a specific approach adopted by a school of thoughts (as illustrated in French, German and other European languages).
