The article examines the little-explored St. Petersburg period of life of the famous Estonian artist, the founder of Estonian book graphics and exlibris master Gustav Mootse. Based on a continuous viewing of the illustrated magazines Niva, The whole world, Ogonek, Life and the court, Pugach unknown illustrations of Mootse are revealed, the stages of his becoming as an artist are traced.
