This paper seeks to explore the function of the theme of Spain in Montesquieu’s works and its role in his philosophy of history. It considers Montesquieu’s sources and the controversial nature of his image of Spain that contributed to the Black Legend of Spain in Europe. On the other hand, the article provides an overview of Montesquieu’s reception in 18-19th century Spain.
