The article examines the problem of media and mediality by the example of modern maps and navigation. On the basis of hermeneutic method and mediaphilosophical approach of topological reflection the map is seen as media, wich mediates our spatial experience. The maps were not that important for constitution of space as in XX century. Therefore difference between maps as tools and maps as media of topology should be taken into account. Because maps cannot be eliminated from orientation in space, they embody mediality of new media, which determine our meanings and opportunities. Nevertheless, mediality is inseparable from particular media practices.Therefore various art practices offer new opportunities of digital maps and reveal their symbolic dimension.
