The paper examines one of the possible approaches to modelling the mechanism of identifying a concept, encoded in metaphorical riddles of two types. The role of the mental categorization of the surrounding world for the process of solving the riddle is outlined. The comparison of the concept identifying mechanism in English and Russian riddles is realized, the similarities and differences of this process are stated.
