Zebrafish (Danio rerio) are rapidly emerging as a promising new model species in stress research, characterized by complex behaviors in all major neurobehavioral domains and high genetic and physiological similarity with humans. Here, we summarize common neurobehavioral models of zebrafish stress and discuss their relevance to studying the pathobiology of stress and stress-related human disorders. Zebrafish behavioral tests and methods of stress induction are developing at a rapid pace, fostering our better understanding of complex biological phenomena, including normal and pathological brain functioning and their pharmacological and nonpharmacological correction.
