N2 - The article studies a century-long history of the Krupensky family. The sources used in the article include previously unknown archival documents and some press materials published in Kishinev and Odessa. The Krupenskies is one of the most famous noble families in Bessarabia many of whom became prominent in both Moldova and Russia as politicians, diplomats and public figures. There is hardly another family in Russian history which would possess so many court ranks. However, they were particularly noted for their public activities. Over generations they acted as heads of the nobility in Russia's provinces and districts. Members of this family were rich, highly educated and publicly recognized, with their huge land possessions spreading over Bessarabia and far beyond. Some of the Krupenskies were also known as generous philanthropists donating significant amounts of money to finance hospitals, schools and other regional needs.
