The ultimate Islamic conquest and integration into the Arab Caliphate of the historical Greater Armenia together with the countries of the Southern Caucasus at the beginning of the 8th c. coincided with wide transformations in the Caliphate’s system of provinces, which were referred to using the administrative term vilayet (from Arab. v. ولى] waliā]—lit.: “to rule, to govern”)
