The paper discusses the possibilities, techniques and prospects for creating a visual guide of diagrams describing the intellectual assets of the organization (university, enterprise or company). Such a systematic repository is called a corporate atlas of knowledge maps. It may be used as a classifier. These maps present expertise, knowledge and technologies and visualization, provide information transparency of communications in universities making any collaboration smart and effective. Knowledge and data visualization solve the problem of eliminating barriers between information flows of university departments, as well as between the university and the external environment. The research described in this paper was a part of METACARTA project – “MEthodology and Technology for developing digital knowledge mAps for eduCAtion and Research TeAms”. It is based on mapping the university business school knowledge and competences. The research framework was based on the ontology engineering, where ontologies as conceptual skeleton build the base of faculty knowledge maps. The novel FOCUS-KM ontology (Framework for Organizing Comprehensive Understanding and Structure of Knowledge Maps) was developed. It generalizes a set of knowledge maps attributes and properties. This ontology reflects and unveils the structure of the knowledge landscape and the most essential features of knowledge maps. The most popular ones are suggested to be included into the knowledge atlas from which the decision makers can select relevant maps for their work. This text is an extended, enriched and revised version of the article presented in the proceedings of “The 16th International Conference on Knowledge Management and Information Systems”. In general, the approach can be adapted to business companies and government organizations if they are interested in disclosing their intellectual capital.
