N2 - A review of the production of extreme-power supershort laser pulses and their applications for the interaction of superstrong light fields with matter is presented. The main issues with, and the possibility of, creating pulses with multipetawatt peak power using linear and nonlinear compression are considered. A prediction is made regarding the future use of such laser systems.
