We consider approximation by families of quasi-projection operators in the spaces L_p on the real line. We give upper and lower estimates for the approximation error in terms related to moduli of continuity and best approximations. Under certain conditions, upper and lower estimates coincide in a sense of order, and we obtain complete structural characterization of the approximation error.
