The processes talking place on the surface of semiconductors in electrolytes are discussed in terms of spatial and temporal self-organization. The capacitance and conductance of the semiconductor surface are shown to change abruptly at a critical electrode potential. Concurrently, the density of surface states at the interface decreases, which is characteristic of the formation of ordered crystalline structures. Experimental data are presented for Ge, CdHgTe, and HgTe in electrolyte solutions with glucose, ammonia, EDTA, and thiourea additions.
