Investigations were conducted into the mechanism of spallation failure of the anode of a high-current accelerator under the effect of the pulsed electron beam (E equals 700 kev, I equals 200 kA, tau equals 50 nsec). Analysis of the spallation surfaces in a scanning electron microscope showed the presence of a distinctive dimpled structure. Statistical processing of the fractographs showed that the mean dimple size is 11. 5 multiplied by 10** minus **3m. In contrast to ductile fracture typical of the mechanical stress pulse times of (1-2) multiplied by 10** minus **6 sec, under the effect of the electron beam failure of the material takes place by the mechanism of normal separation at the stresses close to the theoretical strength of the material.
