A new subgenus Afrochoroterpes subgen. nov. is established for two South African species, Choroterpes (Afrochoroterpes) nigrescens Barnard 1932 and Choroterpes (Afrochoroterpes) ndebele Agnew 1962. Larvae, subimagines, imagines and eggs of these two species are redescribed based on reared material from Western Cape province. Eggs of Afrochoroterpes sharply differ from eggs of all other known representatives of Choroterpes Eaton 1881. Egg structure of other Choroterpes s. l. (including taxa known as subgenera or genera Choroterpes s. str., Euthraulus Barnard 1932, Monochoroterpes Kluge & Jacobus 2015, Cryptopenella Gillies 1951, Neochoroterpes Allen 1974 and Dilatognathus Kluge 2012) is very peculiar and can be termed Choroterpes-type. Besides Choroterpes s. l. other than Afrochoroterpes, the Choroterpes-type egg structure occurs in Megaglena Peters & Edmunds 1970 and Klugephlebia Selvakumar et al. 2016.
