Direct experiments have shown that irreversible changes in the properties of semiconductor field-emission cathodes, which occur in heating to temperatures exceeding 150 degree C, are to a considerable degree due to metals which are deposited on the surface of an emitter during the sharpening process in an electrolyte and which alter the conductance of the surface region of the sample.
