Frequencies of several highly informative nonmetric traits in four prehistoric and six recent cranial samples from Japan are analyzed with the principal components method. The observed pattern may be explained by a hybridization process in which Mongoloid characteristics were added to the Jomonese substratum. Their proportions in various populations are estimated.
